Football, sport and ice cream. At first glance, the connection is not obvious. But if you turn off the TV and go to the stadium, you will understand: it is a love triangle that has lasted for more than a century. The sweet coolness on a hot day, when millionaires are running on the field and the stands are cheering. Ice cream is not just a dessert for fans. It is a ritual, an industry, and even part of the tactics (in the figurative sense). Let's figure out how the ice cream and football intertwined into a global tradition.

Ice cream on the stadiums: the history of the issue

As early as the 1920s, the first vendors with ice cream appeared on English stadiums. Fans tired of shouting and noise needed refreshment. In the USA, ice cream in waffle cones was sold at baseball games since the 1930s. Football picked up the trend later, in the 1950s, when mass refrigerators appeared. In the 1960s, ice cream became a symbol of "dolce vita" for fans on Italian stadiums (Milan, Turin). Today, in 2026, it is hard to imagine a football match without ice cream carts in the aisles. In Brazil, at Maracana, ice cream is sold with cries of "Sorvete! Sorvete!" drowning out the roar of the crowd.

Why ice cream is perfectly suited for football

The reasons are physiology and psychology. On a hot day (and many championships are held in the summer), ice cream lowers body temperature and helps not to overheat. During the break between halves, the fan spends energy on shouting, clapping, stamping. Ice cream provides quick sugar (glucose), feeding the brain and muscles. Taste receptors also want a celebration: sweet things cause the release of dopamine, enhancing the joy of the game. Moreover, ice cream is a social glue. Sharing ice cream with a neighbor on the stand, laughing at a fallen spoon - all this brings people closer together. And it's practical: ate the cone - no trash left (except for a napkin).

Stadiums with the most delicious waffles

Fans vote not only with flags, but also with their wallets. In Europe, the best ice cream on the stadiums is known at the "Allianz Arena" in Munich. There, they sell gelato from the local factory "Munchen Gel" with added wheat beer. At "Camp Nou" in Barcelona, there is a strawberry and lemon sorbet reminiscent of Catalan markets. At "Santiago Bernabeu" (Madrid), there is creamy ice cream with pieces of alfajores (cookies). At "The Emirates" (London), there is apple sorbet, a tribute to English gardens. At "Luzhniki" in Moscow, you can find ice cream according to the Soviet GOST (fat content 15%) sold in bricks - nostalgia for the older generation.

Ice cream as a marketing trick

Football clubs have long understood: ice cream is not just food, but also a way to make money and build loyalty. "Bayern" releases a limited series of ice cream in the colors of the club (red, blue, white). "Manchester United" - cones with the club logo. "PSG" - ice cream with the image of Mbappé on the packaging. In 2026, the Italian brand "Gelateria Calcio" created a series "Tastes of Legends": ice cream "Maradona" (caramel with rum), "Baggio" (chocolate with chili), "Maldini" (walnut and honey). A portion of the proceeds goes to children's football schools.

Ice cream and championship finals

The finals of major tournaments do not go without ice cream. According to statistics, ice cream sales in the host country increase by 300% on the day of the final. In 2018, in Russia, ice cream was sold right at the stadium entrance during the final, and in the "Match" branded cones. In 2022, in Qatar, due to the heat, ice cream was literally a lifesaver - it was even distributed by volunteers with carts. In 2026, at the final in the USA ("MetLife Stadium"), a record is expected: 50,000 portions in one evening. Organizers specially brought refrigerators for waffles so that they did not melt under the sun in New Jersey.

Health and the athlete's dilemma

And what about the football players themselves? Can they eat ice cream? On the one hand, it contains a lot of sugar and fat, which is harmful to shape. On the other hand, even dietitians of top clubs allow it in reasonable quantities (one popsicle after the match). For example, Cristiano Ronaldo allowed himself ice cream on his son's birthday. Lionel Messi prefers fruit ice (sorbet) without milk. After winning the championship at "Manchester City", players are served ice cream with champagne. However, trainers do not recommend it: it is better to have a protein bar. However, for fans, ice cream is not about the players, but about themselves.

Special offers and memes

The internet is full of memes about ice cream and football. The classic: "If your team loses, the ice cream softens the pain." Or: "The referee ate ice cream and did not notice the penalty." In 2025, a video went viral on Twitter where a Liverpool fan eats a cone and cries after Everton scored a goal in the last minute. During the 2026 World Cup, a challenge #IceCreamGoal will be launched on social networks: record yourself eating ice cream at the moment when your national team scores a goal.

Exotic flavors for brave fans

The football world is one, but the flavors of ice cream differ. In Japan, they sell ice cream with miso soup and unagi (eel) flavors on the stadiums. In Mexico, they sell ice cream with chili and lime to "heat up" the stands. In Brazil, there is ice cream with acai berries and cassava. In Australia, there is ice cream with vegemite (salty paste), but this is for extremists. In England, they tried to launch ice cream with the taste of shepherd's pie, but the experiment failed. In Russia, there is also a unique offer: you can buy "Mors-ice cream" made from cranberry and lingonberry at Luzhniki - sour-sweet and invigorating.

Ice cream and superstitions

Football fans are superstitious people. Some eat ice cream with one hand, others - in a certain order (first chocolate, then vanilla). In Italy, there is a belief: if you eat pistachio ice cream before a derby, your team will not lose. In Germany, fans buy ice cream at the stadium only after their team scores a goal - otherwise you can "jinx". In Brazil, it is customary to drink acai with a straw, as a talisman.

Football, sport and ice cream are the three pillars on which the happiness of the fan is based. Field, game, sweetness. Without one of them, the evening would be incomplete. In 2026, when the world gathers again at the stadiums, don't forget to linger at the ice cream stand. Buy two cones. One for yourself, one for your neighbor on the stand. Football unites, and ice cream makes this unity sweeter.
